Angkor Wat (english)

Siem Reap

Obviously, since I'm already in Cambodia I couldn't miss the Crown's jewel, Siem Reap. Not by the city itself that made me thought as Phnom Penh as an oasis, but for the Angkor Wat complex, for now called as "park", even though there's no name for it. Cambodia takes about 2 million tourists every year and the majority of them are likely to spend some days there.

Siem Reap is the 2nd most important city of Cambodia and it's located near to Tonlé Sap's northern shore, the biggest lake from Southeast Asia. The city name means "Siam defeated" which is an indirect direct message to the not very welcome Thai neighbors. A significant part of Thailand's territory was once occupied by the ancient Khmer empire before it became part of Siam. If the Camobdians like very much the Vietnamese people for setting them free in the past, the same feelling is not likely to be seen regarding the Thai despite its habits and culture being very similar.

Pchum Ben

That's the festival's name which is celebrate in this huge holiday that takes from Saturday (23/09) to Wednesday (28/09). It's one of the major festivals here and represents a sigle moment during the year in which the Hell's gates are opened so the suffering souls can get some food in the world of the living. Therefore, the Cambodians take generous amounts of rice and fruits to the temples so their relatives in Hell or anyother "location" can feed themselves. During this period people from Phnom Penh are likely to travel to the countryside to visit their families and thus, everything from roads to bus stations are crowded.

The day started (very) early and I woke up at 5 am to walk through the rain in the dark to get to the bus station - remember that there are no lights on the street here. I met Patro and Mariana and we took the Sorya bus to Siem Reap. These were the landscapes during the trip:

The countryside's simplicity mixed with lots of rice fields flooded. It's been raining for more than a week now. September is Cambodia's wettest month and also highlights the end of the Monsoon season. The rain is likely to decrease from October on and it'll get very rare during North Hemisphere's winter. The flood requires some changes. First, most of the houses are suspended by big pillars and second, the national passion - motorbikes - is substituted by boats. Lots of houses have "parked" boats.

1o dia (16 km) / 1st day

We arrived at Siem Reap about 8h later and without sleeping because of the sudden brakings, hornings and all-time stops of the bus. Close to the bus station there's some emptiness, lots of undeveloped pieces of land - flooded. A tuk-tuk was waiting for us. We wen through the main streets until the driver turned to some minor alleys, then it appeared water, then even smaller and flooded alleys. Siem Reap's neighborhoods are made of trully mazes that get all flooded during the rain season. The tuk-tuk snagged but we were lucky and we were able to get to the hotel. (http://www.gardenvillageguesthouse.com). We've got a triple fan hot shower room. All these incredible facilities cost us $3/day/person. However, if you are really on a budget you could get as low as $1/day/person.

Fomos direto almoçar no barzinho do terraço.

We went directly for lunch at the terrace. Plenty of foreigners. We'd like to see the sunset in Angkor which should be by 5h50 pm. Thus we left the hotel in a rush to rent some bycicles. Until we find one and start to ride it was 5 past 5 pm. Then we've got a surprise, we tried one way, we tried the other way, all flooded. The solution was to follow the natives and other foreigners and so we went through the middle of the  flood. After that, we rod liek 8 km in 30 minutes to Angkor. If you get there after 5h30 pm you don't need to pay but the park closes at 6 pm so there's no advantage on it. We went directly through the main gate to the major temples. It was getting pretty dark so we just had the time to walkthrough the entrance and take some crap pictures.

2o dia (32 km) / 2nd day

The second day started (even more) early, at 04h30 am. We wanted to see the sunrise in Agkor, thus we needed to wake up very early since we hadn't bought the tickets yet. We rode in the dark through the maze alleys, floods and mudd. Around 5h30 am we were in the park entrance. The problem was that the place we had previously thought to be the ticket office it was not. I would have to ride more 4 km to get to the right place and loose our beautiful sunrise. Properly, a guard offered us the "express" service to get the tickets, $2/person for he and his friend that took us on a bike there. I had no choice. The ticket cost $20/day, $40/3 days or $60/1 week. We took the 3 days one.

We were able to get into Angkor around 5h50 pm but there's still time. Inside it was crowded of tourists waiting for the same thing. We've found the place now we had to wait.. :)

It was an amazing experience and I got very excited to be side-by-side with a lot of poeple waiting for a rare beautiful sunrise in the middle of the raining season. It worthed to wake up so early!

Afterwards, we continued our tour inside the major temple, Angkor Wat. More pictures:

Very close to this temple there's a foodcourt with lots of small restaurants and also an orphanage.

After that we continued again, now heading to Ta Prohm, famous by its giant trees taking the walls. This place was also part of the scenery of Tomb Raider's movie with Angelina Jolie. She acutally ended up adopting a child after being here for the shooting.

No caminho, algumas dificuldades / During the way, some difficulties:

The road was all flooded some parts. Nothing that could stop us since the water was under our knee.

I think this temple was one of the coolest one. The mix between something alive - the threes - and the building it's really unusuall so there's no way to not get impressed with that. The tree and the roots are gigantic. It's incredible!

Then, we went to Ta Keo temple, not that famous by its structures but by its height!

The stairs' steps are very small so you can't go up front and thus you have to climb it on its side.

During the way we stopped in some Pagoda and we saw the boy with the hand is fronthead but also the veyr modern monks. One of them listening music with an Ipod and the other, which I don't have his picture, was smoking.

We were close to the afternoon and the we went for lunch. I were close to the foodcourt area with our bycicles then an young lady shown up and started to run fast behind us. She was responsible for seeking prospect clients. She started to scream that she could make very good discount for us, even though it wasn't the cheapest place but with her discount, effort and our tiredness we went to her place. Soon Patro began speaking Khmer with her and other people that worked for the restaurant.  W acutally spent a lot of time there and we had the time only to try to catch the sunset in Phnom Bakkeng's temple.

No caminho pra lá, algumas poses inusitadas / Some unusual pictures on the way:

The temple is located in the top of a hill, something pretty rare here, and took almost 1/2 h to get to the top and more 10 min to climb the temple's stairs. It was incredible to see the Japanese/Korean tourists energy, many of them old people, that climbed without any problem to the top.

The views there were pretty cool! It was crowded with tourists waiting for the sunset. However, it was too cloudy and therefore there was no sun neither sunset to happen so we decided to go back to the hotel. At the end of the day we were completely exhausted, we rode 32 km with gearless and old bikes, in the mudd and in the flood, not easy. The advantage is there are no hills on the way :)

3o dia (24 km) / 3rd day

This day started late since we had slept a lot. We woke up like 10 am and we were able to leave the hotel just after 11 am. There were still some temples to be seen and we also went to some smaller ones.

The 1st place to visit was the walled city's portal (Angkor Tom). It's a bridge over a pit and you can see lots of soldiers holding their hands in both sides.

Close to the shore there were 2 kids fishing. It was nice to take a picture from them since they didn't notice us.

This was a group of very noisy Korean tourists who were screaming a lot to take a group picture. I took picture, there was a lot of older people and they had a very characteristc Asian fashion.

At the city's entrance we've found 2 minor temples which are generally out of the tourists' map. We didn't notice any tourists in none of them. The first was very tall and the stairs were not in good condition which required extreme caution and side climbing.

After that we went to one of the most famous temples here, Bayon, knwon by its faces.

Then we went for lunch in the same restaurant of the previous day. Because of that we got a spontaneous 50% discount over the menu's price and lots of local sweets for us to taste.

The little packs had different sweets but similar. There were beans, peas, sweet-potates, coconuts, bananas and corn. The sweet is made of the mixture of this ingredients with coconut milk, sugar and other stuff. Tastes nice! :) I've never imagened the only wai to get some beans here would be as dessert.

There was still 1 classic temple to go, the Elephants' Terrace. At the terrace itself, the prettiest thing it was the front view, that you could see a very green grass and lots of smaller temples. Behind, a huge, gigantic temple, but it was closed for visitors. However, since there were no tourists around, the surroundings looked like some very misterious and unexplored place. A very different experience..

This was our last temple and we've decided to leave since the parkt was about to close. Before that, however, some pictures that took our attention:

Then we took another 8 km back to the hotel, without flood. During the night I had the opportunity to meed other 2 Brazilians wo were visiting Siem Reap, 1 Polish, some Australians and also Germans, almost everyone looked like 20-30 years old. It's an interesting experience to find so much people with so different stories travelling to the same places. This backpacker environment doesn't happen in fancy and tied hotels but in simple places with pool table and beer. Sometimes it's worth to give up of some confort to take experiences like that. In the worst case scenario, you'd still save some money! haha

We would have the 4th day but the rain started during the night and didn't stop unil mid day. Then, since we had already been to the whole classic circuit and even some alternative ones, we decided to go back to Phnom Penh. I recommend this trip for all of those who are living or travelling in Southeast Asia. Siem Reap has direct flights connecting it to Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Singapore, Kuala Lampur and many other touristic hubs. The accomodation price might be the Cambodia most expensive one but is ridiculous cheap when compared to international standards. Everything cost around $90, below you can get details:

Ônibus ida e volta / All-round bus: $ 12,75
Bike (4 dias) / Bycicle (4 days): $4
Hotel: $12
Ingresso / Tickets: $40
Moto / Bike transportation: $2
Cartões-postais (10) / Pack with 10 postcards: $1
Refeições/Água / Meals & Water: $18,25
